    Mekedonia Humanitarian Association (MHA) has raised more than 74 million Birr donations from SMS over the past three years, according to a report from Fana Broadcasting.

    Ethio Telecom was collecting the money form its users which send a text from a cell phone – literally. A service that allows users to send three birrs to Mekedonia via SMS was launched three years ago.

    According to the report from Fana, the Mekedonia has collected more than 74 million birr as donations from people who have participated int he donation scheme via Ethio telecom.

    Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew today have visited Mekedonia , home for the elderly and mentally disabled people.

    After the visit the Premier has called upon all Ethiopians to extend supporting hands to the needy.

    On the occasion, Zinash has contributed 15 modern wheelchairs for the needy people in Mekedonia.

    Mekedonia is a non-profit organization founded by Biniam Belete in 2011 aiming to alleviate the plight of the destitute elderly and mentally disabled people.

    The center focuses on the provision of care for the most helpless and frail elderly people and people with mental illness, as they are a vulnerable segment of the society.
